(from GM Press Release) Cadillac today announced plans to build a Star Black Limited Edition XLR, a special collectors’ vehicle for the upcoming model year. As production begins this summer on the 2006 convertible roadster, 250 of the first cars will become part of the series, with each vehicle sill plate numbered to identify its place in the collection. The Limited Edition vehicle will be on display during the New York Auto Show, which runs through April 3.

The Star Black Limited Edition XLR will boast features available only on the special model. In addition to the standard features found on the current XLR, this version will be equipped with 18-inch polished chrome wheels and a special metallic paint finish called Star Black.

This black color variant, available only on the Limited Edition, is mixed with a Crystal Silver Xirallic flake. The advantages of this flake, made of aluminum oxide crystals and coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2), are that they are cleaner and more pure then other types of metallic flakes. The Xirallic flake is ideal for reflecting a uniform sparkle when viewed in the sunlight.

“The Star Black Edition is a dynamic example of how we will continue to keep the product fresh while remaining true to the Cadillac brand,” said John Howell, Cadillac’s product director. “Like the Neiman Marcus XLR in 2003, we expect this edition to be a success.”

The XLR, first introduced as a 2004 model, is built at the J.D. Power quality award-winning Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Bowling Green , Ky. The two-seater with a retractable hardtop includes a Northstar 4.6L V-8 VVT engine in a rear-wheel drive configuration. The car is also equipped with Magnetic Ride Control, StabiliTrak, adaptive cruise control, head-up display, keyless access with push-button start, DVD navigation, XM Satellite Radio, OnStar, a Bose premium sound system and heated and cooled seats.

(from Cadillac Press Release) This week, a jet-black, state-of-the-art Cadillac DTS limousine will roll through the nation's capital during the Presidential Inaugural Parade revealing publicly for the first time the new design direction for the 2006 Cadillac DTS production model.

Similar to the new DTS, the limousine makes a bold styling statement by incorporating Cadillac's contemporary design cues to the front and rear portions of the vehicle. Redesigned front and rear fascias integrate Cadillac's signature egg-crate grille with center-mounted wreath and crest badge, jewel-like vertically oriented high-intensity xenon headlamps and state-of-the-art LED tail lamps.

George W. Bush, the President of the United States of America will be the first to travel in the new Cadillac DTS limousine during the parade route along Pennsylvania Avenue on Thursday, Jan. 20. The sight of the president waving from a Cadillac has become an American tradition.

"General Motors and Cadillac are proud to write this latest chapter in American automotive history with the introduction of the DTS presidential limousine," said General Motors Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner. "We are pleased that our historic relationship with the U.S. government and chief executive office has continued through the years."

With a new design and unique construction under the skin, the new Cadillac DTS limousine is handcrafted and dressed in a jet-black clearcoat finish. The vehicle is a considerably longer, wider and taller version of the production model that becomes available later this year. To maintain national security, the limousines are equipped with state-of-the-art protection and communication systems.

The vehicle interior boasts six-passenger seating with comfort and visibility for all occupants. A rear seat executive package features a concealed, foldaway desktop that can be deployed when conducting affairs of state. The rear seats have an adjustable reclining feature along with the adaptive seat system, which senses the position of the occupant in the seat and automatically adjusts the cushion for added comfort. Moreover, rear seat passengers can enjoy their own premium sound system complete with a 10-disc CD changer. Wood accents, rich blue leather and cloth complete the executive interior.

An embroidered presidential seal is positioned in the center of the rear seat back panel, as well as on each rear door trim panel. Presidential seals are also affixed to the exterior rear doors. The U.S. flag is placed on the right front fender, and the presidential standard is located on the left front fender when the president travels in the vehicle. Flush-mounted High Intensity Discharged (HID) spotlights illuminate the flags at night.

The 2006 Cadillac DTS production model is set to make its first public appearance at the Chicago Auto Show in early February.

The DTS marks the ninth new vehicle introduced into the Cadillac portfolio since 2001 and aligns with Cadillac's alpha naming strategy established by the CTS, SRX, XLR and STS vehicles. Evolving from three models - DeVille, DHS and DTS - with exterior and interior differentiation, the DTS will incorporate a single-model strategy with one exterior and various option packages.

From its Cadillac-signature styling to its power and refined ride characteristics, the DTS is a product of unwavering attention to detail which builds on the strengths and appeal of the Cadillac brand.

The DTS will be built at the award winning Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center in Detroit, Michigan and is expected to go on sale in the third quarter of 2005.

History

"It is a great honor for Cadillac and General Motors to be associated with the highest office of the United States," says Cadillac General Manager Jim Taylor. "In fact, Cadillac has been building limousines and special vehicles for U.S. presidents, diplomats, ambassadors and foreign dignitaries since the early 1900s."

One of the first chief executives to ride in a Cadillac was President Woodrow Wilson, who rode through the streets of Boston during a World War I victory parade. A lavish 1928 Cadillac town car was used extensively throughout the Coolidge Administration.

In 1938, two Cadillac convertibles dubbed the "Queen Mary" and "Queen Elizabeth" were delivered to the U.S. Government. Named after the great ocean liners of the time, the 211/2 feet, 7,660 pound vehicles were equipped with a full ammunition arsenal, two way radios, and heavy duty generators. Durable and reliable, the two "Queens" served Presidents Roosevelt, Truman and Eisenhower.

President Eisenhower, who was known as a "car buff," had ridden in one of the first Eldorados during the1953 Inauguration Day Parade. The vehicle was unique as it had the first wrap around windshield, which quickly became a standard in domestic and foreign automobiles.

In 1956, the Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth II convertibles replaced the original series. The vehicles were 21 feet long and weighed 7,000 pounds. Like their predecessors, these vehicles were fully armored with state-of-the art communications at that time. Moreover, the vehicles were fitted with narrow rims inside the tire in case the tires were shot out. The Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth II served not only President Eisenhower, but also Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Both vehicles were retired in 1968.

The Reagan administration was delivered a 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine while a Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham - Presidential Series was delivered to the Clinton Administration in 1993. Unlike previous models, the Presidential Brougham was designed, developed and manufactured totally within General Motors. Moreover, the vehicle was designed to provide unquestionable protection. Minimizing exposure to external threats, no sunroof or running boards were installed on the vehicle.

Currently, the 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine resides at the Ronald W. Reagan Presidential Library & Museum in Simi Valley, Calif. while the 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham is located at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Ark.

The predecessor to the current limousine was the 2001 Cadillac DeVille limousine. It was the first Cadillac to be adorned with the division's current wreath and crest emblem. The vehicle is still in service today.

(from GM Press Release) The 2006 Cadillac DTS limousine and Escalade ESVe limousine reinforce the luxury nameplate’s commitment to introduce exciting, world-class products. These new Cadillac limousines feature technologies geared to the passenger and luxuriously appointed and spacious interiors.

“The DTS and Escalade ESVe limousines are the latest additions to Cadillac’s continued product renaissance,” said Cadillac General Manager Jim Taylor. “Our intention is to launch vehicles that are boldly designed, powerful and feature driver- and passenger-friendly technologies. We expect that the DTS and Escalade ESVe limousines will appeal to affluent individuals, celebrities, executives and leading ground transportation companies in the U.S. ”

The DTS and Escalade ESVe (‘e’ stands for executive) limousines were previewed by the limousine and livery industry earlier this month; however, Cadillac is unveiling them nationally to the media and general public at the New York International Auto Show.

It was a natural decision for Cadillac to publicly showcase these unique vehicles in New York City , the heart of the largest ground transportation market in the country. The limousine and livery industry provides chauffeur-driven transportation to the public, using a variety of vehicles such as traditional stretch limousines, sedans and SUVs. With 35 percent of all livery businesses residing in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions, and operating an estimated 44,300 professional vehicles, it is easy to understand Cadillac’s business rationale.

In addition to the sheer volume of new limousines that are sold annually, Cadillac is focusing on the number of passengers that ride in chauffeur-driven vehicles. “Our professional vehicle product portfolio offers a tremendous opportunity to expose millions of people who may not be familiar with our most recent offerings to a truly re-energized Cadillac brand,” said Taylor . Cadillac conservatively estimates that 2.6 million people travel in Cadillac professional vehicles each year – that’s 2.6 million potential customers for Cadillac products.

DTS limousine

The 2006 DTS limousine, constructed on Cadillac’s specially engineered, heavy-duty DTS limousine chassis, features a 70-inch wheelbase extension. The exterior keeps with Cadillac’s signature contemporary design of the DTS retail model. It is equipped with new front-end sheet metal, grille, fascia and standard high-intensity xenon headlamps. The new decklid, rear quarter, rear fascia and light-emitting diode (LED) tail lamps and CHMSL are also new.

With seating for six passengers in the rear compartment, the luxurious and sophisticated interior of the DTS is taken to new heights. The DTS limousine features a technologically advanced multi-media center, including a 22-inch LCD TV mounted in the partition, an AM/FM stereo with CD and XM radio capabilities, 5-speaker premium sound, a DVD player, wireless headphones, and a tablet PC.

Rear seat passenger comfort and convenience is also a priority in the DTS limousine. The forward-facing rear seat is heated and has a power reclining feature. Passengers will also find electronically controlled doors in the burled elm consoles, a writing table, vanity mirrors, a refreshment compartment and refrigerator, a magazine rack and even a humidor. Passengers are in complete command of their personal sanctuary, with fingertip controls for the enhanced HVAC system, intercom system, privacy partition, direct and indirect LED lighting, and more.

Escalade ESVe limousine

With a 40-inch wheelbase extension, the Escalade ESVe limousine is a mobile board room and entertainment suite on wheels. It is equipped with opulent amenities and seating for four passengers in the rear cabin.

Similar to the DTS limousine, the Escalade ESVe has a high-tech electronics system that would satisfy audio and video aficionados. A 26-inch LCD TV is located in the privacy partition for forward-facing passengers, while a second 15-inch LCD TV screen is mounted in the ceiling for rear-facing passengers. Complementing the immense visual qualities of the Escalade ESVe is a 250-watt, 5-channel stereo system. It features a flip-up LCD touch screen and capabilities for AM/FM and XM Satellite Radio, DVD, CD and MP3, and 14 speakers for pure surround sound performance. The Escalade ESVe also has an embedded satellite TV system that offers more than 125 channels of live programming and CD-quality music.

The rear cabin features nuance leather on all interior surfaces with genuine suede inserts, plush carpeting and LED lighting. The four leather captain’s chairs are heated, and the two rearmost seats have a power reclining feature along with power extending foot rests. A partition separates the driver’s compartment from the rear cabin for optimum privacy. There are two consoles in the rear that house a variety of features, including polished aluminum and walnut tables for each seating position, a refrigerator, cup holders, a tablet PC, a fax and printer, controls for the hands free intercom, HVAC system and more. Even with the privacy partition closed, passengers in the rear have a commanding view of the road with a system that displays images on a 7-inch LCD screen in the rear console.

All Cadillac limousines are built by Cadillac Master Coachbuilders using specific chassis manufactured by Cadillac. With 13 coachbuilders across the country, the program is designed to provide custom precision-crafted limousines, livery vehicles and funeral coaches with the finest conversions that meet strict Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Cadillac is the luxury division of General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) and produces vehicles such as the STS performance sedan, the XLR convertible roadster, the SRX midsize utility and the CTS entry-level sedan. In addition to selling the popular DeVille nameplate, Cadillac also sells the popular Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT.

(from General Motors Press Release) Cadillac's global footprint is set to move up another gear: After the introduction of the CTS (2003), XLR and SRX (both 2004), and shortly before the European sales start of the STS, General Motors' premium brand will be at the 75th Geneva Motor Show (March 3-13, 2005) to present the study of a new premium mid-class model. Cadillac BLS is specifically targeted to meet the needs of the European customer, as well as other global market customers. The four-door sedan (length/width/height: 4,680/1,762/1,449 mm), with its clear, sharply defined contours, striking wedge shape and elegant interior, continues Cadillac's characteristic design language. The show car thus provides a clear preview of what can be expected from the new Cadillac BLS, which is scheduled to reach the market in spring 2006.

"Premium is not a question of vehicle size but purely of excellence," said Bob Lutz, responsible at GM for product development and Chairman of GM North America. "And in this aspect, the Cadillac BLS will definitely be a top player in its league."

Among the particular strengths of this front-wheel drive sedan, apart from its expressive design, are its outstanding ride and acoustic comfort. From a technical point of view, this Cadillac will ring in a new era in brand history: For the first time, a turbo diesel variant will be available. Like the gasoline versions, the turbo diesel variant will be positioned at the upper end of the performance scale. Cadillac BLS will offer the dynamic driving performance customers have come to expect from this brand. For countries where the traffic moves on the left like the UK, the Cadillac BLS will also be available with right-hand drive.

The exterior: Cadillac's unique style in European format

A design team led by GM Designer Chip Thole designed the new Cadillac BLS show car and the premium sedan is thus immediately recognizable as a member of the Cadillac family. "The most striking feature is the emphasis of the vertical lines on the front and rear," says Thole. "The characteristic v-form of the chrome-plated grill is picked up again by the trunk lid. The large side faces communicate a sense of strength and solidity." Nineteen-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels underline the impressive looks of the show car.

The unique style is further expressed by clear glass, vertically positioned headlamps featuring bi-xenon technology, fog lamps integrated into the body-colored bumper and a wide air intake below the radiator grill. Another high-quality detail is the thin chrome strip running along the lower edge of the side windows. The very latest LED technology is used in the full width center high mounted brake light, which is prominently positioned on the trunk lid. The vertically positioned tail lights add to the various design elements making Cadillac BLS another uniquely designed Cadillac.

The interior: Luxurious atmosphere and modern infotainment

Inside, the show car has many details that signal its affinity to the Cadillac family. The cockpit of Cadillac BLS is underlined by details like the three-spoke steering wheel and the analog clock on the center console. The displays for the circular instruments have white numerals on black background, while the needles are red. All the seat surfaces are covered with high quality leather, with the visible stitching emphasizing quality. The outlets for the ventilation/air conditioning adopt the brushed aluminum look used for the frame of the center console.

The modern infotainment system consists of high-quality audio units from BOSE, DVD-based navigation with touchscreen operation, Bluetooth-capable telephone systems and remote controls on the steering wheel.

The engines: Turbo-diesel and three gasoline engines

To comply with the needs of the European market, a turbo diesel variant will, for the first time, be added to the list of available engines. The 1.9-liter four-cylinder unit with common-rail direct injection technology will feature a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter that will comply with Euro 4 emission standards. The range of gasoline engines - all of which are turbo-charged - will comprise two 2.0-liter four-cylinder versions and one 2.8-liter six-cylinder unit. All the power units can be combined with either manual or automatic transmissions and all excel with Cadillac's typical high output.

The chassis: Emphasis on comfort and dynamic driving

The chassis, with a McPherson strut in front and a four-link rear axle is tuned to the powerful engines and the high demands that are made on a premium vehicle. "The development of the chassis was focused to enable dynamic driving, but at the same time ensuring a ride with comfort," explains Larry Craig, who, as Program Engineering Manager, shared responsibility for the engineering of the Cadillac BLS.

"Apart from that, we also devoted attention to achieving effective noise and vibration isolation," adds Craig. "Environmental influences are, as far as possible, kept away from the passengers." A number of measures have been taken to achieve this, and both the diesel and the gasoline engines will reap the benefits. The rear axle and the chassis, for example, are decoupled from one another with the aid of special rubber bushings, and the wheelhouses, roof and trunk are especially sound-insulated.

"Cadillac is on the fast lane in its U.S. home market with the best sales figures since 1990. We managed to overtake another key competitor in 2004 and are ready to globally hit the fast lane. With the BLS, Cadillac will add a premium mid sedan to its model range that is geared to the specific demands of European customers. The new entry-level model underlines the brand's global ambitions and its key role in the premium segment," said Cadillac's General Manager, Jim Taylor.

General Motors revealed the most technologically integrated vehicle ever at today's opening of the 2005 SAE World Congress. The Cadillac STS SAE 100, which pays homage to SAE's 100th anniversary, will serve as a working laboratory that will aid engineers in developing future production vehicles.

"We have challenged our engineers to take the best of today's vehicle technologies and integrate them with promising future technologies to demonstrate how they will function together in a real-world driving environment," said Jim Queen, GM vice president, Global Engineering and general chairperson of the 2005 SAE World Congress. GM is the host company for this year's World Congress.

GM worked with 38 suppliers to integrate 50 different technologies into the STS SAE 100, ranging across safety, chassis, powertrain, electrical and comfort and convenience categories. Nineteen have never been in production, 22 are in production somewhere other than the 2005 STS and nine are currently on the production 2005 STS.

The vehicle, commissioned by Queen and executed by the GM Performance Division Vehicle Development Center, is much more than a "dream team" of technologies: Engineers will use it to document how the various technologies interface with each other and how they can be applied to future production vehicles.

"Vehicle integration is behind game-changing safety features like electronic stability control, which we are rolling out across our entire fleet," said Queen.

"Our goal with this vehicle was not simply to see how many different technologies can be incorporated into one vehicle. We want to learn how a variety of relevant current and future technologies can be made to function harmoniously while enhancing the total driving experience."

STS SAE 100 technologies include (see accompanying sheet for full list of technologies and their suppliers):

  • 3-D navigation system: This prototype system uses actual pictures taken by satellites to provide the driver with a "bird's-eye-view" of the vehicle's surroundings. The images are so detailed that even trees and lampposts are visible. This detail helps the driver to relate the images on the navigation screen to his surroundings.

  • Oil condition sensor: An industry first in new vehicle features, this oil probe can determine and detect the actual level and remaining engine oil life. It can reduce the need for costly engine repairs due to poor oil maintenance as well as prevent unnecessary oil changes.

  • Inside rear-view mirror with embedded organic LED screen: This new device offers clear images from the rear seat (via a rear seat camera) or back-up camera, depending on what gear the vehicle is in. In addition to improving visibility behind the vehicle, it can reduce the distraction associated with tending to rear seat passengers.

  • 1280x960 wallpaper

    1600x1200 wallpaper
  • Electronic limited slip differential: Unlike passive LSD, this technology enhances vehicle traction without brake/engine intervention, as well as provides additional vehicle stability from the differential yaw dampening effect. It also is easier to integrate with electronic stability control systems.

  • Two-piece carbon fiber wheel with magnesium spokes: This two-piece wheel is designed to be the lightest yet strongest wheel in production, which reduces unsprung weight. Reducing unsprung weight improves acceleration, braking efficiency, handling and fuel consumption.

  • Lane departure warning: Using a real-time vision system, it detects road markings and notifies the driver with a visual signal and a vibration (haptic alert) in the seat when a vehicle traveling at more than 35 mph crosses over the markings unintentionally. This technology could be especially promising in curbing drowsy-driving crashes.

  • Side blind zone alert: Radar sensors warn a driver about to change lanes if another vehicle is in the driver's blind spot. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these crashes damage 830,000 vehicles annually.

  • Capless fuel system: Removing a gas cap can be difficult for arthritic, disabled or elderly people. With this system, the user simply pushes an interior button and an electronically activated ball spins open to allow access to the fuel pipe, and closes when the nozzle is removed. In addition, a capless system means there's no cap to lose and no risk of a loose cap triggering a dashboard warning light.

  • Adaptive cruise control: Rear impacts account for nearly 29 percent of police-reported crashes, and most are due to driver inattention. Adaptive cruise control, already available on some Cadillacs, uses sensors to detect objects in the vehicle's path and slow it accordingly.

  • Reconfigurable color head-up display: This HUD projects digital readouts of key data (speedometer, navigation system turn prompts, tapshift, audio settings and adaptive cruise control status and alerts) onto the windshield in an easy-to-read and intuitive way.

  • Rear seat entertainment system: Who says only the people in the front seat can have fun? This entertainment system consists of two, 6.5-inch headrest-mounted LCD screens, wireless infrared headphones and two Microsoft Xboxes with DVD packages. Players can even "feel" the action with a haptic controller.

  • Rear vision camera: This system provides a wide angle view of the area behind the vehicle for detecting obstacles while backing up. The field of view is projected onto the navigation screen in the instrument panel.

The STS SAE 100 is powered by a supercharged LS2 engine yielding 505 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 520 lb.-ft. of torque at 3600 rpm. It is mated to GM HydraMatic's newly developed, longitudinal 6L90E six-speed transmission, capable of supporting more powerful engines like the supercharged LS2. The transmission features Driver Shift Control, which gives the driver the ability to shift gears sequentially with a tap up/ tap down mechanism.

The STS SAE 100 was tested at GM's proving grounds in Milford, Mich. and Mesa, Ariz.
